Contributions for Ireland, 1642

J. Wilson (ed.), Buckinghamshire Contributions for Ireland, 1642, and Richard Grenville's Military Accounts, 1642-1645 (Bucks Record Society vol.21, 1983)

In early 1642 Parliament empowered local officials to obtain "voluntary" contributions from everyone who could afford it towards the suppression of the revolt in Ireland. Although the Civil War was about to break out, it was the one thing which King and Parliament agreed on. Detailed returns survive for much of Bucks. Winslow contributed £4 15s, considerably less than Swanbourne or Great Horwood. Can this be attributed to the lack of wealthy people in the town, a habit of avoiding taxes which seems to have existed in the 16th century, or reluctance to support the war (which might suggest there was considerable pro-Catholic sympathy)? Robert Mainwaring the staunchly Protestant vicar contributed twice as much as anyone else. Some people who made a contribution in 1642 did not pay the Poll Tax in 1641.

Mr Holyman: Possibly an error as Margaret Holliman paid the Poll Tax in 1641
